AMD opteron processors A brand name in the pages of PC and server processors, Advanced Micro Devices () has unveiled three dual-cores Opteron in its server chip line. The three low power opteron processors are Models 1218 HE, 2218 HE and 8218 HE. Insiders have aired the view that price war between with Intel has led AMD to introduce its new opteron processors at slashed rates.

Whatever may be the cause, the fact remains that these processors will prove great beneficial reducing power consumption by almost 75 percent, of course during idle times. All the three opteron processors are 2.6 GHz chips which require 68-watt maximum thermal design power. Further, the chips have 2MB of on-chip cache. In their web site, AMD claimed that the new chips were manufactured using a 90-nanometer production process.

Now, as regard prices, AMD carefully drafted the price tag as because its rival in this sector Intel too was keen in slashing rates of their products. The 1218 HE is priced at $432, the 2218 HE at $611 and 8218 HE chips $1,340. Of course these rates are in respect of 1000 unit quantities as because this is a standard quotation method for processor sales. With these new chips energy conscious consumers will certainly have a nice time because with low bills they will be able to achieve greater density in the datacenter.
