Mad 4 Mobile phones is carrying a report about a very interesting idea by Anthony Harrison:

upside down phone This is exactly what it looks like: a “upside down phone”. Anthony Harrison, who filed a patent application for his idea, claims that the conventional method of holding a mobile phone is unergonomic, as it means that the majority of the phone is not resting in the palm. In his design the phone would rest in ones hand palm and the thumb would be in a much more natural position.

I personally would have to try this one out to be able to judge if it is true or not, but I guess a phone where you could flip the display and number positions would be the best solution.

I doubt we will see a phone using this design very soon…
