Everex StepNote VA4101MThe first laptop with Windows for less than $500 has now appeared: the Everex StepNote VA4101M. I am note sure you will actually get much fun out the new Vista features, e.g. the eye candy, as the Everex StepNote VA4101 runs on a mere 1.46GHz Intel Celeron M 410 processor and 512MB RAM, which is slower than most current entry-level laptops and at the low end of the minimum requirements for Vista. Also the 60GB will be full quite soon, seeing as Vista needs at least 10GB. The Everex StepNote VA4101M does come with most features you would expect: WiFi (802.11b/g), Ethernet and 56k modem, but sadly no Bluetooth, for connectivity, three USB2.0 ports for your peripherals and a VGA port for video output. They also managed to squeeze a double-layer DVD burner into the budget.

Seeing as the Microsoft Windows Vista Home DVD would set you back a whopping $191.99 from Amazon, this isn’t a bad deal!
