Until my RSS Reader showed a BoingBoing article titled “HOWTO make your own laptop PC“. I had never really thought of this before. Torquil Harkness from the UK was one step ahead this time and has completed his DIY project of building his own laptop, using Mini-ITX components. On the project website he says, that he wanted to create a Laptop that he could upgrade at any time, which is a problem of existing conventional laptops – they get old and you can pretty much through it away or flog it for a few dollars on eBay. His current model features a 2GhZ processor, 1GB RAM and a ATI Radeon 9200 128MB PCI graphics card. But as soon as technological advancement demands this, he can upgrade.
It may not be as nice as many designer notebooks, but it sure will impress your gadget loving friends and amaze your other friends. He also points out that it could have been smaller, if he had used nano ITX.
Check out his project website for a howto guide and more pictures.
